There is this big buzz about whether you should eat street food or not.

I wrote about Streetfood in China and the prices, if you are curious head over to this post.

So how safe is streetfood? Is it healthy?

Well let me tell you this, it will be most likely be very delicious.

The thing about food being safe is a very big issue in the western world, which is a good thing, but sometimes we are maybe going a bit overboard. Yes food can go bad very quickly, but the street vendor knows that too, and if he sells something that makes people sick, the word will spread fairly quickly and he will be out of business.

Sometimes it even can be super healthy ;)

In generall I say, that bit of dirt won’t kill you and if it is grilled at a high flame, it is most likely fairly safe, probably as safe as what you would get in the restaurant.

I am a sucker for street food, as the meals are usually fairly cheap and I do know how some restaurant kitchens look like, which is why I prefer it if I get to see how my food was made.

More in the mood for some steamed rice? Can't make much of a mistake with this =)

I also didn’t have any trouble yet, but then I always had a rather strong stomach. I always joke that its made out of Iron.

There are 3 simple rules.

  1. Listen to what the person in front of you has to pay or figure out the local prices.
  2. Check if the meat and fish where frozen (then it’s usually fresh enough). If there are just smaller batches, try to see where the rest is stored. If it smells funny don’t buy there… If you are not sure, skip the meat, fried noodles or a dumpling soup are really yummy too 😉
  3. Lastly the food should be cooked or grilled with a high heat. If it is just being rewarmed, it could be that it has been sitting there already the whole day, better leave it.

Some of the best food I ever had was fried rice in Suzhou, which I ate sitting at a green kids chair, surrounded by a group of Chinese checking if I could eat with chopsticks.

Some other great stuff is the grilled chicken or grilled squid. Everything grilled is great =D

In the end I would just get onto the streets and sample different stuff, even weird stuff might well be worth it.

(Scorpion tastes like crisps and cicadas like chicken 😉 )

Streetfood is my favorite Hangover cure, late nights Snack and Fastfood. It goes quick, I can simply take it with me and eat it in the park or at home and it doesn’t matter that I am traveling solo 😉

Do you eat Streetfood? What is your favorite??
